As a tropical island in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is an inevitable location of various water sports. Its capital San Juan has sprawling beaches and glitzy resorts as well as sports shops that provide ample equipment for water activities. Most major hotels and resorts also provide arrangements for fishing tours, scuba diving, and other water sports.
The surf in Puerto Rico is one of the most challenging even for experienced surfers, with waves reaching up to 35 feet. In San Juan, the primary surf spots are La Concha, Stop Eight, and Conrado Beach Lagoon. Excellent surfing locations can also be found in Piñones, Isla Verde, Luquillo, Manati, and Culebra. There are surf shops near the beach that offer surfboards and other equipment for rent.
Swimming of course is already a given when vacationing in San Juan. There are a lot of public beaches that offer lots of sun, sand, and cool blue waters. Adequate facilities are also provided such as changing rooms, showers, and concession stands. There are also a lot of beachfront hotels in San Juan that offer private access to the beach.
Fishing is another popular water sport in San Juan. There are a number of marine charters in the city that offer fishing excursions where anglers have a chance to reel in a blue marlin, tuna, and other big game fish. The catch-and-release system is practiced in Puerto Rico though so the best souvenir you can have is a picture taken with your catch.
For those who want to explore the underwater treasures of the Caribbean, scuba diving and snorkeling are the best activities to take on. The visibility is about 60 to 75 feet near the beach and about 100 feet or more farther from the shore while the average ocean temperature is 81 degrees Fahrenheit or about 27 degrees Celsius. The diverse community of wildlife in the Puerto Rican waters is an awesome sight to behold. There are French angels, seahorses, snappers, and other fascinating sea creatures that thrive on the lava reefs. Some hotels offer diving courses and short lessons and outfitters arrange for diving and snorkeling sessions.
Boating, sailing, and kayaking are also prominent water activities in San Juan. With a sunny climate, beautiful beaches, and a boundless ocean, the list of water sports available in San Juan goes on and on.
