Tourism in San Juan

Tourism is a major industry in the municipio of San Juan in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is one of several islands found in the Caribbean along the Atlantic Ocean and is in general, a very popular tourist destination. One of the places that stand out from among Puerto Rico's tourism scene however, is its capital city of San Juan. Every year, thousands and thousands of tourists and vacationers come to San Juan by land, air or water in order to enjoy the sights and sounds that San Juan offers travelers, honeymooners, backpackers, adventurers and vacationing families from all over the globe.

Places with interesting histories such as France and Mexico seem to attract a large number of tourists because visiting and learning about historic places is both an entertaining and an informative activity. And the City of San Juan is one of these places with an interesting history and several historical locations worth visiting.

Old San Juan, one of the 18 pueblos or barrios in San Juan, is a famous historical neighborhood that has become a permanent fixture in San Juan historical tours and tourist hot spots. This San Juan community is more than 645 years old, which is probably why it was named Old San Juan after the city expanded and many other places were incorporated into the municipio. Old San Juan at one time has also been a walled military fort and stronghold and a great remainder of these walls continue to stand at present. There are more than 400 old buildings in Old San Juan that have been restored to their former grandeur so that a walk along the cobblestoned streets of Old San Juan feels like being transported into another time in history.

The natural beauty of San Juan, Puerto Rico is also very influential to the city's tourism industry. After the Second World War, Puerto Rico and other Caribbean areas saw an increase in tourism due to the large flow of tourists and vacationers to the region. San Juan, being one of the oldest and most well-known Puerto Rican cities, not to mention it is also Puerto Rico's capital, is a favorite destination for tourists who have heard of the beautiful beaches and perfect tropical climate of the Caribbean. San Juan beaches, lakes, streams, parks and national forests and wildlife sanctuaries bring in thousands of nature-loving tourists the who year round.

The constant and strong influx of tourists has lead to the construction of several tourist facilities such as hotels, resorts, golf courses, shopping centers, nightclubs and restaurants all over San Juan. These tourist facilities are concentrated near tourist hot spots such as beaches, tourist districts and commercial areas where they will be most useful to tourists in San Juan. From one-star to five star amenities, fast food stalls to gourmet restaurants, nightclubs to bar, San Juan has plenty of facilities of different kinds that exist in order to serve tourists and vacationers. Transportation facilities such as the San Juan Harbor and the airports in San Juan also help bolster up the city's tourism industry.
