Sports in San Juan

Sports and athletics is an important factor of any country, city, neighborhood or any place in general. Yes, there is recreational sports that allows our minds and bodies to relax and to de-stress itself. However, sports is not simply an purely recreational outlet. Engaging in sports is a great way to discipline one's mind and body because of the different aspects of training and practicing any type of sport. One learns to analyze situations in a baseball match for instance, while swimming encourages discipline and continuous practice. Sports and athletic competitions also create a sense of belonging and is a great method for community building. It comes as no surprise then to see countries and cities such as the City of San Juan in Puerto Rico encouraging sporting activities and supporting local athletes.

The City of San Juan, Puerto Rico has been known to produce several successful sporting teams and athletes. If the main men's basketball league in the US is the NBA League, Puerto Rico has the NSB or the National Superior Basketball League. The San Juan NSB basketball team called the Santurce Crabbers have won the championship five times these last ten years. They won on the year 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and on 2003 and was considered during those years of back-to-back championship streaks as a dynasty in the Puerto Rican national basketball league.

Another professional basketball team in the San Juan sports arena is the San Juan Senators. Along with the Santurce Crabbers, these two notably successful and talented sports teams from San Juan has earned their city more than fifteen championships over the years. Not only are these San Juan basketball teams champions in Puerto Rico, but they have also repeatedly played and won in many basketball competitions all throughout the Caribbean.

Aside from basketball, the City of San Juan in Puerto Rico is home to several other notably famous and successful athletic teams in other sporting fields. For the men's volleyball team in the Liga Superior de Volleyball Masculino, San Juan has the Playeros de San Juan volleyball team while there is the Chicas de San Juan women's volleyball team representing the municipio of San Juan in the Liga Superior de Volleyball Femenino.

Soccer is a very popular sport in many parts of the globe and it has found many fans and supporters in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There are several professional soccer teams in San Juan such as the Club Deportivo Gallitos, San Juan Galazy, Fraigcomar, Puerto Rico Islanders B and the Don Bosco soccer team. These San Juan football teams either compete in the Campeonato Nacional de Futbol or in the Liga Premiere de Futbol de Puerto Rico.

Recently, there have been constructions of other sporting facilities such as Olympic size pools and golf courses in San Juan which would undoubtedly contribute well to the city's growing support for sports and athletes.
