Demographics of San Juan

Based on the census conducted on 2000, the total population of the City of San Juan in Puerto Rico is 434,374. Like in the United States and in many other countries of the world, women dominate men in San Juan when it comes to number. Of these 434,374 individuals, 46% or around 199,785 are male while 54% or 234,589 residents are of the female gender.

When talking of age demographics, it is quite noticeable based on the 2000 census that San Juan, Puerto Rico is comprised mostly of citizens aged 18 and over. More than three quarters of the city's population falls under this age limit since 326,709 San Juan residents or 75.2% of the city's population are 18 and above. Only 7.1% of the population are under five years old and 14.8% of San Juan are 65 years old and over. This means that this Puerto Rican city's median age is 35 years old.

An overwhelming majority of San Juan's population are Latino or Hispanic (98% of the population) regardless of race. 315,939 or 72.7% of the population are white, 11.9% are African American, both Asians and American Indians make up .5% of the population respectively, and other races make up 9%. According to the 2000 demographics of San Juan, Puerto Rico, 94.7% of the population are just of one race while the remaining 5.3% are products of two or more races.

Educational demographics in San Juan based on the 2000 census shows that 76.5% of San Juan's population has attained a high school diploma or a higher level of education while 28.9% has a bachelor's degree or higher. Compared with the US where 80.4% of its population finished high school, Puerto Rico has a lower level of educational attainment. They do however, have a larger number of college graduates compared with the United States which has only 24.4%.

The economic demographics of San Juan is rather interesting. Around 44.3% of the population aged 16 and above are part of the city's labor force. That means around 150,380 individuals in the city are working and earning, not just for themselves, but for the entire city as well. The average time it takes for San Juan workers to get to work is 26.7 minutes. The median household income is around 17,367+ dollars and the median family income is around 20,640+ dollars every year.

San Juan, Puerto Rico sadly has about 37% of the families in the city living in standards below poverty level while 40.8% of the individuals in the city live below poverty level. Compared to the United States which has only 9.2% of the families and 12.4% of the individuals in it living in below poverty level living standards.
